Children's speech does not sound like adult speech because they make typical child-like "sound replacements". These sound replacements are called phonological processes by some researchers. These phonological processes are outgrown in a typical pattern. By age 8, most children produce error-free speech. Language are also developmental in nature growing from responding to sounds to interacting with a peer group using advanced vocabulary.

If you are concerned about your child's speech and language skills, contact the teacher to determine if communication struggles are affecting their classroom performance. Communication concerns are addressed at the Response to Intervention meeting.
